MV-22 Osprey have a multi-engine, double -piloted, self-deployable, medium lift, vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) tilt rotor aircraft intended for combat, for combat support, for battle service support, and for Special Operations missions worldwide. It will replace the Corps' aged fleet of like CH-46E and CH-53D medium lift helicopters. The CV-22 will be utilized by the Air Force for their particular Operations missions maintaining maximum commonality with the MV-22. Aircraft avionics peculiar to the Air Force unique mission requirements constitute aircraft differences. The MV-22 is going into combat shorthanded. As a result of decisions the Marine Corps made over the past decade, the aircraft lacks a heavy-duty, forward-mounted machine gun to lay down suppressing fire against forces that will surely try to shoot it down.
