Avenger Weapons System, as part of the Stinger Weapons System, to provide a light weight, day/night limited adverse weather fire unit for countering the threat of low altitude, high-speed fixed or rotary wing aircraft. Also carries a machine gun for self-defense.
The Phalanx (CIWS) Close-In Weapons System underwent operational tests and evaluation on board USS Bigelow in 1977, and exceeded maintenance and reliability specifications. Phalanx production started in 1978 with orders for 23 USN and 14 Foreign Military Sales systems.
